A GOTHIC MUSICAL GHOST STORY

The Midway Goes Still

Two souls. One ticket. An endless turn.

The fairground is closed. The carousel is not. Somewhere inside its music, two voices begin to remember.

THE INVITATION

Somewhere, the music is playing again.

There was a time when this was an ordinary fairground. Bright painted horses. Pennies warm in a child's hand. A tune you could hum on the way home.

But there is no way home from the Midway now. Only the next turn.

01 / THE STORY

Everything begins before you remember.

Read the story in five turns. Each one brings them a little closer to what the Puppeteer has hidden.

THE FIRST TURN 01 / 05

The horses know the way.

She remembers a blue coat. Pennies in her palm. A carousel with ribbons tied to its horses. For a moment, she remembers a boy beside her, and a small promise made over the music.

The fair seems harmless. So does the tune. Neither can quite remember how they got on.

“I don't remember climbing on.”

THE SECOND TURN 02 / 05

Someone keeps changing the rules.

Every time the horses pass the gate, the story shifts. The boy is told he came alone. The girl is turned toward the wall. Each is assured the other has forgotten them.

The Puppeteer knows exactly when to lower the music, when to raise the flute, and when to make an apology sound like gratitude.

“He tells me I arrived alone.”

THE THIRD TURN 03 / 05

The tune belongs to someone else.

The little five-note flute has followed them for so long it feels like part of their own memories. But the Puppeteer plays it when he needs the carousel to obey. He makes them repeat his version of what happened until even the words start to change.

He calls it keeping them safe. Neither can find the gate.

“Round by round, you changed the rules.”

THE FOURTH TURN 04 / 05

Two names. Not one.

A voice comes through the music. The boy hears something he knows. The girl remembers his face before she can remember the story she has been told about him.

Two names are folded inside a coat. A ticket slips between the horses: ADMIT TWO. Something the Puppeteer has kept apart begins to find its way back together.

“Ma la tua voce la ricordo.” I remember your voice.

THE FIFTH TURN 05 / 05

For a moment, the midway goes still.

The boy and girl finally say aloud what the ride has taught them to deny. The horses slow. The organ falters. The familiar flute no longer sounds like a promise.

Then the Puppeteer steps from the dark and asks a question neither one can answer without risking everything.

“Now, which one of you has been telling stories?”

And the music begins again.

THE WORDS THEY COULDN'T ERASE

“You can't call it play
when I can't get off.”

The music remembers everything.

The five-note flute. The carousel sway. The voices that won't stay where they're put.
