BEFORE THE FIRST TURN · THE ORIGIN

A field of warnings. A fair of lights.

Skip the origin · Begin at Turn One

Before the carousel, the ground belonged to mist and black water. In the Gaelic-speaking villages beyond the hill, people spoke softly of the sìth, the unseen folk, and of an t-each-uisge, the water-horse whose beauty could lead a traveller where no road returned. By dusk, even the bravest walkers kept to the higher path.

Then a French fête foraine arrived with gilded timber, velvet awnings and a bright new manège. The showmen hung lamps above the wet field. On the first night, little wandering lights rose from the reeds to meet them, like the feux follets of old French tales. Nobody noticed which lights were theirs.

The keeper of the fair played five notes on a silver flute. He had spent too many evenings listening to people say goodbye. He asked the old ground to grant him one perfect night that would never end. Beneath the boards, something answered. It gave his longing a music, his music a wheel, and the wheel a hunger. The keeper became the Puppeteer.

He could not make anyone love him. He could make them forget they wanted to leave.

The folklore behind this fiction

Scottish Gaelic stories of the sìth and the each-uisge (water-horse), alongside French tales of feux follets (wandering lights), helped inspire this world. The Midway, its Puppeteer and their meeting are an original fictional creation by Michael Hopper, not a traditional legend.

The first promise.

Before the music turned cruel, the fair smelled of burnt sugar, rain on warm boards and apples bruised in the grass. A girl in a blue coat held two pennies in her palm. Beside her, a boy pointed to a white horse with daisies painted around its neck. His voice shook a little when he said, “We can ride together.”

Above the ticket booth, a French sign read TOURNEZ, TOURNEZ—turn, turn. The girl remembered her grandmother's warning about the each-uisge, the beautiful water-horse that invited you close and did not always bring you home. But this horse was only wood. Even its tears had been painted on.

They climbed aboard. The organ opened like a door into summer. Somewhere high above the bells, a flute played five small notes. They promised to meet at the gate when the ride stopped. The boy reached for her hand; for the length of a breath, they held the same warm air.

Then the gate went past twice. On the third turn, the crowd stood still as photographs. A ticket moved along the floor without any wind: ADMIT TWO. Beneath the wooden horses came a sound like water moving in its sleep.

“Promise you won't get off without me.”

She reached toward him. He reached back. The music lifted just enough to swallow the distance between them.
