BEFORE THE FIRST TURN · THE ORIGIN

A field of warnings. A fair of lights.

Skip the origin · Begin at Turn One

Before there was a carousel, there was a black pool in the field. On windless nights its surface trembled as though something beneath it were breathing. The elders in the Gaelic-speaking villages spoke of the sìth, the unseen folk, and the each-uisge, the water-horse: beautiful enough to approach, dangerous once you climbed upon its back. They warned children not to follow unfamiliar music across the reeds.

Then a French fête foraine arrived with painted horses, brass poles and a manège bright enough to make the night seem harmless. The showmen raised their lamps over the pool. Little lights rose from the water to meet them, like the feux follets of French fireside tales. Soon no one could tell which lights had been hung by human hands.

The keeper came with the fair, though nobody remembered watching him arrive. The ticket ledger named every rider, but the page reserved for departures had been neatly torn out. Each evening he stood beside the gate with the only key in his pocket. Sometimes he held an old photograph face down against his coat. If anyone asked whom it showed, he smiled and began another tune.

One autumn night, five notes rose from a silver flute. The manège began to turn with its machinery cold. By morning, a few riders had forgotten who had brought them. They remembered only that the keeper had been very kind. He offered another turn, then another, and no one could quite remember when the gate had been locked.

Below the boards, the old black water remembered what the music took away.

The folklore behind this fiction

Scottish Gaelic stories of the sìth and the each-uisge (water-horse), alongside French tales of feux follets (wandering lights), helped inspire this world. The Midway, its Puppeteer and their meeting are an original fictional creation by Michael Hopper, not a traditional legend.

The first promise.

The girl had two pennies, a blue coat too large for her and a grandmother’s warning she was trying very hard to forget. The boy had been staring at the carousel for an hour. When she caught him looking at the white horse with painted daisies, he said, too quickly, “I wasn’t frightened.” She told him she was, a little. That made it easier for him to admit the same.

They bought a ticket stamped ADMIT TWO. She chose the white horse with painted daisies. Beside it stood a black horse wearing a blue rein, and the boy chose that one. With her penny she scratched two little marks beneath a painted daisy. Then she pulled a narrow thread from the cuff of her blue coat and knotted it around the black horse’s blue rein. “So we’ll know which ones are ours,” she said. He touched the knot as though it were a promise worth keeping. Whatever happened, they would meet at the gate.

The organ began, warm and grand. Beyond the turning horses, people laughed with their mouths open. The boy reached across the brass pole and almost caught her hand. Above the music came five small flute notes. They played once, then again, a little nearer. On the second circuit, the gate had moved. On the third, the laughing people were perfectly still. A woman held a fallen apple in midair.

The girl called to the boy. He answered, but the carousel was suddenly wider than before. Between them stood rows of horses that had not been there a moment earlier. Far below, under the boards, something wet shifted in its sleep.

“When the ride stops, promise you’ll still know me.”

He nodded. She almost saw him answer. Then the platform turned, and the space between their horses grew wider than the fair itself.
